Groundbreaking cannabis study reshapes chronic pain treatment
A whole-plant medical cannabis extract has, for the first time, successfully completed a Phase 3 trial demonstrating both efficacy and safety in treating chronic lower back pain. Published in Nature Medicine, the findings represent a turning point for patients, healthcare providers, and policymakers—paving the way for regulatory approval and widespread clinical training in cannabis-based pain management.
The trial involved 820 adults suffering from chronic lower back pain, a condition affecting over 500 million people worldwide. In Norway alone, nearly one million individuals live with persistent back pain of varying severity, according to national health authorities. This patient group places immense demand on healthcare systems, with lower back pain ranking as the single most costly condition in terms of disability benefits and lost productivity. Any meaningful reduction in symptoms could yield substantial benefits—for individuals and society alike.
The investigational drug VER-01, derived from a full-spectrum cannabis extract, was evaluated against a placebo in a randomized, controlled Phase 3 study. Within just 12 weeks, participants receiving VER-01 reported significant pain reduction, with further improvements observed during the open-label extension phase. The therapeutic effect remained consistent throughout the entire study duration.
Notably, patients with neuropathic pain components also experienced clear symptom relief. Pain levels spiked upon discontinuation of VER-01—a finding that reinforces its sustained efficacy.
While side effects were more common with VER-01 than placebo (83.3% vs. 67.3%), they were predominantly mild and temporary. No signs of dependence or withdrawal were detected.
"This isn’t just another study—it’s a regulatory milestone," the researchers emphasized.
With these results, VER-01 is now positioned to seek formal drug approval, enabling healthcare professionals to receive evidence-based training in the safe and effective use of medical cannabis for pain relief.
